Friends of the North Fork of the Shenandoah River was started in 1988 by concerned residents of the North Fork watershed. It was the first organization in the northern Shenandoah Valley formed to protect a specific river basin.

Since that time, Friends has monitored water conditions of the North Fork, spoken up as "the voice of the river" on policy decisions that impact the North Fork, educated thousands of residents of all ages, and organized activities from clean-ups and picnics to substantial riparian restoration providing long-term protection on tributaries of the North Fork. FNFSR is always in need of volunteers for a variety of tasks. (The North Fork, though mainly located in Shenandoah County, is the source of water for the City of Winchester.)
